As Vincent Vega put it, “it’s the little differences”. When moving to New Zealand I expected lots of things to take care of. And indeed, there were lots of little things to do. But what puzzles most, it’s the little differences. It’s not only about driving on the left side of the road (that was easy and well-known). And it’s not about having two water taps, one for cold and one for hot (really hot!) water (God only knows why they do that).
Did you ever said “Thanks” to the bus driver bringing you to work? No, me neither. But here in Wellington they do. What’s really a pain is the fact that when searching for a house to rent, you will never know how many square meters the place has. Only thing you get is the number of bedrooms, no matter how big these are. If you are lucky, they tell you if it’s a king-size or queen-size (regarding the bed). But for Germans this is pretty much like saying that the place had enough space so far.
I’ll keep you up-to-date. There’s lot more…
If you wanna know what I'm doing next, the answer is quite simple. Me and my family are going down under for a while, at least one year, to Wellington, New Zealand.
I will work for a small company named Sharesight, who make share portfolio management really easy. My responsibility will be that of a senior Rails developer.
I'm really looking forward to this adventure! More details to follow.
9flats.com is a flat-sharing community, where you can find places to stay all over the world. My responsibility was to build the platform from scratch, together with the guys from Railslove, using Ruby on Rails, jQuery, HAML and SASS. The team was distributed over 3 different locations, which at the end wasn't a barrier at all.

Whenever you think about moving to another city, even in another country, try out the very awesome tool Expatistan, which helps you with finding out on expenses and how much money you should probably earn to make a living over there.

I just started a new project, and it’s called makemates! I’m not yet telling what it’s all about, so stay tuned, and follow @makemates on Twitter while waiting.

It’s done, finally. Inspired by Jan Krutisch, and after having heard so much about Jekyll, I rewrote my homepage (and yes, once again, a little redesign).
The image I used for the header background was taken by myself using Instagram.
